“We are born women, we transform our bodies by becoming
drag kings, and as a form of artistic expression, we take
possession of the rules which determine masculinity, we
put all of this on the stage, we interpret it, we express it”.
Drag kings are prevalently female bodied or identified
performance artists, who dress in masculine "drag" as
part of their performance routine and play men’s characters.
A drag king performance involves the use of different
“languages”
of expression, and in this way it becomes a
political expression,
because it questions the elements
and principles on which the
social values are built:
“In our performances we want to deconstruct the gender,
mix it up, and blur its boundaries, in order to demonstrate
what gender really is: undefined. The gender is what you
want it to be”.
